MAMMAL & SEALIFE FOSSILS, ROCKS & CRYSTALS FOR SALE

INTRODUCTION TO FOSSILS

Fossils are traces of past life that include body fossils (actual remains of organisms) and trace fossils (indication of animal activity). Bones, teeth, and shells are examples of body fossils, while burrows, tracks, and footprints are examples of trace fossils.

The fossil record shows a sequence of more and more complex organisms through time. One-celled organisms appeared before multi-celled organisms, plants before animals, and invertebrates before vertebrates. Among the vertebrates, fish appeared first, then amphibians, reptiles next, and finally mammals and birds.

The Geologic time scale was developed in Europe, over the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Geology Time Chart

On the Geology Time Chart, Earth's history is divided into eons, which are subdivided again into eras, and further subdivided into periods and epochs.

Fossils are the recognizable remains, such as bones, shells, or leaves, or other evidence, such as tracks, burrows, or impressions, of past life on Earth. Scientists who study fossils are called paleontologists. The names of most of the eons and eras end in zoic, because these time intervals are often recognized on the basis of animal life.

Rocks formed during the Proterozoic Eon may have fossils of relative simple organisms, such as bacteria, algae, and wormlike animals. Rocks formed during the Phanerozoic Eon may have fossils of complex animals and plants such as dinosaurs, mammals, and trees.

Our Texas mamal fossils come from the Quaternary Period which is subdivided into the Pleistocene and Holocene. The Pleistocene or "Ice Age" includes the events from 1.8 million to about 10,000 years ago.

The Holocene (or Recent) includes the past 10,000 years. Vertebrate paleontologists designate the late Pleistocene (the past 250,000 years) in North America as the Rancholabrean Land Mammal Age.
