Beautiful 1880-1900 Germantown eye dazzler Navajo rug. Extremely finely woven, the Three Ply Germantown was the first of several Germantown yarns the Navajo could obtain and are the rarest of all. In addition, since the yarn was so fine to work with and was relatively expensive to obtain, only the best weavers worked with the yarn. Consequently, relatively few were made, and most were destroyed through use, making these remaining examples particularly rare. This beautiful Native American rug features a stunning design with bright vivid colors. It has a very fine tight weave. This historical era Navajo rug is in good condition with some light wear from age and use. The fringe has worn down. The rare rug measures approximately 26" tall x 24 1/2" wide.

Large (50"x 76") circa 1890-1910 Navajo Blanket measuring 50"x 76". This beautiful Native American rug features a stunning design with bright vivid colors. It has a very fine tight weave. This historical era Navajo rug is in good condition with some wear from age and use. The rug has 6 warps and 13 to 14 wefts per square inch.It appears to be a transitional weaving from around 1890-1910, and woven with Churro wool and vegetable dyes.This was the period in the late 1800's when the Navajos were recovering their Sheep herds after the US army slaughtered the Navajo Churro Herds back in the 1860's. This rug could have been made with a combination of German town wool and the Navajo Churro wool as well. The rug is very striking and for the most part, is all there.

Spectacular old 78 inch by 40 inch Navajo Eye Dazzler, Germantown era transitional rug, circa 1880-1910. This transitional eye dazzler rug followed closely on the heels of the German town rugs when conventional wool was once more available on the Navajo reservations. An original handmade piece of art history of the American Southwest. This rare rug came from an estate sale and is in good condition for the age. Some wear on the corners, and some very small stains with a repaired worn-thru area near the center.

The influx of Germantown three- and four-ply yarn entered the Navajo weaving story in the 1880s. Its brilliant colors, and the Navajo weavers� thirst for this color, added style to the sedate �Chief�s Patterns.� Germantown yarn gave birth to the �Eye Dazzler.� Extremely finely woven, the Three Ply Germantown was the first of several Germantown yarns the Navajo could obtain and are the rarest of all.
