KOSSE AREA OBITUARIES

Corine Garrett Cook
November 8, 1899-February 25, 2005, Age 105

On Texas Independence day, March 2, 2005, the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Kosse lay to rest one of the true historical treasures of Kosse, Corine Garrett Cook who died on Thursday, February 25, 2005 at the age of 105. She was buried in Cottonwood Cemetery at her birthplace, Hammond, Texas.

Corine Garrett Cook was born on November 8, 1899 to Frank Garrett and Fannie Mae Garrett in Hammond, Texas. Memorial services were held on Wednesday, March 2, at the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Kosse with Rev. G.A. Loudd officiating. Corine confessed Christ at an early age at Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church under the late Rev. Pettie. She later joined Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully in the mission ministry. Corine was educated in the Calvert Public School System. She picked cotton from her early childhood years until her 50's. She was an example of resiliency and strength.

At 105 years of age, she was a true historian. Corine could recall in vivid detail the sinking of the Titanic, World War I, Prohibition, The Women's Suffrage Movement, the Great Depression, World War II and the Civil Rights Movement.

Susan (Susie) Hammond Henry born in Kosse on December 28, 1873; married J.R. Henry on November 4, 1893 and had two children:John Allison Henry (born in about 1895) and Grady Wallace Henry born in 1897. Susie died of appendicitis in December, 1900 leaving behind two little toddlers.

Susie Hammond Henry
December 28, 1873-December 30, 1900, Age 27

Mrs. Susie Hammond Henry, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Hammond, was born December 28, 1873, was united with the Kosse Baptist Church when about 15 years of age. She was married to Mr. J. R. Henry November 4, 1893, and departed this life December 30, 1900.

"An angel has come and borne her away,
From earth's sorrowing night to eternal day,
She made glad her home as mother and wife,
She made glad the city of eternal life.

We weep for her and our time's spent in greiving,
She rejoices in Heaven, her reward there receiving,
She is missed as daughter and sister below.
But Heaven, thank God, no changes can know."

It seems to me there is a pen which is held in God's own hand and we the ink, and when, according to His judgement, our days are spent,
He dips His pen in our life's blood and enscribes our names in the "Book of Eternal Life".
And then it seems to me that some names appear dim and others bright, but it must be that the name of a mother is the brightest of all.

Yea, why should we question His goodness, is He not Lord of All? He knows why a mother should be taken from children and husband, still, we ask for the good in it.
Is it good for a mother to be taken from her little ones? We look at it from a worldly standpoint and call it hard, hard. Death is hard!

We feel and believe that we are prepared to separate from a loved one, but when Deaths icy hand seizes that one, all that is in us rebels, rebels to see the last breath, rebels to see her still in the arms of death.

We are mortal , and our dear dead sister is immortal. We are left to mourn her in the flesh. Her spirit has returned to the God who gave it, and is today rejoicing with the angels in Heaven.

It is hard, Susie, Oh, so hard, to realize that no more will you run in to speak a kind sweet word.

We oft-times spoke of you as our sympathizing sister, our sorrows and pains seem yours and you were ever ready with the sympathizing tear. We are selfish!

We miss you and would call you back. But no longer, for we know that you are "Asleep in jesus", all your pains and sorrows ceased, and God wipes all tears from your eyes.

Sleep on, sweet sister, and may thy Guardian Spirit hover 'round us and your dear little boys, to guide us to meet you "Beyond the Sea".
Sister.
