THE KIOWA INDIANS OF TEXAS

The Kiowa Indians, native to Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Montana, spoke a language related to the Pueblo Indians called Kiowa-Tanoan. In pre-historic times, the Kiowas occupied Pueblo villages near the Canadian River in what is now the Texas Panhandle. These ruins were abandoned sometime in the middle ages (around 1400 A.D.).

The early origin of the Kiowas is not known but Kiowa stories passed down from generation to generation suggest they migrated great distances from as far south as Central America and as far north as Bear Butte, Montana.

Similarly, Pueblo stories talk of ancesters that migrated great distances before returning to their homelands in New Mexico and Arizona.

In the early 1800's, the Kiowa joined forces with the Comanches and took part in many raids on the white settlers that began moving into the Texas territory in the 1830's.

The Kiowas were eventually forced onto reservations in Oklahoma after the battle of Palo Dura Canyon near Amarillo in the early 1870's.
