Welcome to the Pleasant Grove Home Page
Sweet Potato Harvest Time in Pleasant Grove in the early 1940's! I think that's an old 1941 Chevy Truck!
Bill Hedrick is second from the right in this picture provided by Nolan Hinson.
The following photo was taken in front of the Pleasant Grove school in May of 1947 timeframe. The Pleasant Grove school housed grades one through six and had two rooms. The door to the left was the room for grades one through three and the door on the right was for grades four through six. Each room had one teacher. The school was consolidated into the Rosebud School District in 1948 or 1949. There was not a paved road from Pleasant Grove to Rosebud at that time.
If anyone remembers the names of the students we could not identify, please send us an email.

Lyphus and Mattie Reece Easterwood (wedding picture taken in 1901 on left)
These early-day settlers of Pleasant Grove
moved to the area in the late 1930s, before electricity was available. They used kerosene lamps to light their house, and Mattie cooked on a wood stove. They did have an ice box and a truck from Rosebud would deliver a block of ice about once a week. While the ice lasted, they could have ice water and tea. Milk and butter could be cooled. Mattie used a churn to make butter. During the times when there was no ice, milk was poured into a glass jar and lowered into the well.
Lyphus started a Sunday School in the old church house which was not being used, and a congregation began to grow. In the winter, he would walk the four miles to the church to light the stoves so that the building would be warm by church time. Later, as the congregation grew, they built a new building which is the Baptist Church that is there today. Lyphus and Mattie are buried in the Powers Chapel Cemetery.
